Valencia Citrus

Historical USDA watercolour of the Valencia Citrus citrus, painted 1860–1875

The Valencia is a sweet orange prized as a late-season juice variety, ripening after most other oranges have passed. Named for the Spanish region of Valencia though its exact origin is debated, it was propagated in nineteenth-century England and then planted widely in California and Florida, where it became the backbone of the orange-juice trade. USDA artists recorded it as commercial citrus expanded across the country.
