Jonathan Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Jonathan Apple apple, painted 1840–1882

Jonathan arose in the 1820s in New York State. Small to medium and bright red, it has crisp, juicy flesh with a lively, spicy, sweet-tart flavour well suited to both fresh eating and cooking. Widely grown across the United States in the 19th century, it became a parent of numerous later apples.
