Red Astrachan Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Red Astrachan Apple apple, painted 1840–1875

Red Astrachan is a very old Russian apple, carried to England and then to America in the early 1800s. One of the earliest to ripen, it is bright red with a waxy bloom and crisp, juicy, tart flesh. Quick to soften, it was prized for early-summer sauce and cooking rather than storage.
